According to The Decoder, OpenAI is trying to win customers away from Anthropic with aggressive discounts. Companies such as Rippling, Replit and DataCamp reportedly describe cost reductions of up to 90 percent. This shows how fiercely the AI market now competes for paying business customers.

What is being reported

According to the report, Anthropic's growth has slowed. OpenAI is apparently using this phase to gain market share. The cost is its own margins: the margin describes how much of the revenue is left after costs are deducted. Anyone who discounts heavily earns less per customer.

Chinese providers such as Deepseek add further pressure. They push cost pressure in the market even higher, so even established providers can hardly avoid a race to the bottom.

What this can mean for businesses

Companies usually pay for AI models based on usage, for example through a programming interface (API). With large volumes, discounts therefore weigh heavily. However, the figure of up to 90 percent is a maximum, not an average. The report does not say which terms apply in individual cases.

Anyone considering switching providers should look at more than the discount. A switch can mean effort: instructions to the model have to be adapted, results have to be retested, and quality has to be checked for your own use case. How long a discount lasts is also relevant, because a provider with shrinking margins may change its terms later.

For smaller teams and developers, on the other hand, the competition is often good news. Falling costs can make projects possible that were previously too expensive. It still makes sense not to tie applications too closely to a single provider, so that a later switch is easier.
