With Voxtral 3, Mistral AI has introduced a new family of speech models meant to power real-time voice agents. According to The Decoder, the system bundles speech recognition, speech output and a development kit for voice agents. It supports more than 50 languages.

What the package contains

Voxtral 3 consists of three building blocks. Speech-to-text converts spoken language into text. Text-to-speech does the reverse and outputs a text as a voice. The Voice Agent SDK is a software development kit. With it, developers can combine the two into a voice assistant that holds conversations.

Another feature: the agent can use tools during an ongoing conversation. This means it can access other programs or data sources while the user is still speaking, for example to look up information. How well this works in practice is not stated in the report.

Data sovereignty as a selling point

Mistral emphasizes operation on your own infrastructure or via APIs hosted in the EU. This is meant to ensure data sovereignty, that is, control over where voice data is processed and who can access it.

Voice recordings can contain personal information. For companies and public authorities with strict data protection requirements, the processing location can therefore be an important selection criterion.

Assessment

Real-time means that an agent should respond without a noticeable pause so that a conversation feels natural. The source gives no measurements on this. Anyone considering a deployment should test quality, response time and language coverage in the desired language themselves. It is also better to clarify data protection questions in advance. The report contains no information on availability or licensing terms.
