On 7 October 2026 OpenAI introduced GPT-6 in ChatGPT together with a new interface called “Intelligent UI”. Instead of delivering only text, ChatGPT can show interactive elements in the answer, for example buttons, calculators, charts and forms. For users, what changes is mainly how the answers look.

What happened

According to reports based on OpenAI's own announcement, the rollout began worldwide on 7 October 2026 in the Chat area of ChatGPT, first for the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. For Enterprise, availability depends on administrator settings. Users on the Free and Go plans received access a day later, on 8 October.

Answers can now mix text with charts, graphics, forms and tappable buttons. OpenAI and the reports give examples: a calculator that splits the total of a restaurant bill, a map with stops and possible detours for trip planning, and a savings calculator. Which format ChatGPT picks depends on the question; no special prompt is needed. Anyone who wants to can still explicitly ask ChatGPT to build a tool for a particular task.

OpenAI justifies the step by saying it makes complex topics easier to learn. A product manager said, according to reports, that ChatGPT should help with everyday tasks such as planning recipes or trips. Anyone who wants fewer visuals is supposed to be able to dial them back, as TechCrunch writes. How far that goes is reported differently by the sources: one guide says the whole thing cannot be switched off completely, there is only a setting for “less”. Another source notes that ChatGPT can also stay with plain text when the question calls for it.

Uncertainty about the models

On the question of which model is behind the launch, the reports do not agree. One source writes that paid plans get GPT-6 Sol in Chat and Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna from 8 October. Wikipedia, by contrast, describes the 7 October release as “GPT-6 Instant” and dates its stable version to 8 October. Another source noted that the Help Center still listed GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go when it looked; one blog gives 9 October as the Help Center date. According to the sources evaluated, only this is certain: the new interface launched on 7 October, and the model names on the plans are reported inconsistently.

Background

GPT-6 did not come out of nowhere. According to one report, OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on 3 September 2026 and brought GPT-6 Sol and Luna to the API on 22 September. For Astra the same source gives $10 and $50 per million tokens. For Sol and Luna the sources evaluated contained neither a cost figure nor a context window size. OpenAI also stresses that the change touches only Chat; the models for Work and Codex stay unchanged.

The feature has critics too, and the reports name their objections. One author argues that the tools could challenge calculator websites and converters. Another warns that the answers could use tokens faster and leave additional room for false statements (“hallucinations”). According to these reports, OpenAI itself conceded that the model's design judgment still needs to improve. In other words: the model decides for itself when a chart or a calculator fits, and that decision does not always succeed yet.

What this means

For users, the practical gain lies where an answer consists of numbers, places or choices. OpenAI's examples show where the feature applies: with a calculator you can adjust yourself, you can split a bill or play through a savings plan, and in trip planning a map shows stops and possible detours. You do not have to open a second program for that. At the same time, a chart looks more convincing than a paragraph but is not automatically more correct. One guide therefore advises checking the numbers behind a chart before reusing them. That is a tip from a guide, not substantiated criticism of the feature.

For free users, it matters that the feature does not stay limited to paid plans. According to the reports, Free and Go received it a day after the launch.

For companies using ChatGPT Enterprise, note that availability depends on administrator settings. Anyone who wants to use or block the feature in their organisation should look there.

For developers, the sources name no new interface. OpenAI describes the change as part of Chat. Whether and how something similar can be built into your own applications cannot be gathered from the sources evaluated.

A note on interpretation: the reports rely mostly on secondary sources and on OpenAI's own account. Some figures, such as a user count of 1.2 billion a week that appears in one report, could not be confirmed and are not used here.

Frequently asked questions

What is “Intelligent UI” in ChatGPT?

A new way of presenting answers: instead of only text, ChatGPT shows charts, editable graphs, forms, buttons or small calculators directly in the answer when needed. ChatGPT chooses the format based on the question; no special prompt is required.

Who gets “Intelligent UI”, and since when?

The launch was on 7 October 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, depending on administrator settings for Enterprise. Users on the Free and Go plans followed on 8 October.

Can the interactive elements be switched off?

TechCrunch writes that users will be able to dial the visuals back. How far that goes is reported inconsistently: one guide speaks of a setting for “less”, not for “off”.

Does this apply to all areas of ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI, the change affects only Chat. The models for Work and Codex stay unchanged.
